Lions register first away win

Guiseley gave their fans an early Christmas present with their first away win of the season courtesy of Michael Rankine’s seventeenth minute header against a tenacious Chorley side who are third in the National North and were looking to avenge the Lions 3-2 vitory in the 2014-15 Play-Off Final.

Chorley were the first to press and John Maxted produced a good save to deny Marcus Carver.

Will Hatfield put the visitors first effort just over and Adam Boyes overhead kick found Jordan Preston who’s cross was cleared.

The next attack proved more productive as the Lions forced a comer and Rankine powered home a header from James Wesolowski’s corner.

The home side continued to press and Adam Roscoe had a shot tipped over by Maxted.

On the restart Rankine’s header found Boyes who crossed for Preston to see his shot tipped on to the bar.

The same player then put a shot just over the angle and Boyes shot across goal trickled just the wrong side of the post.

Jake Cassidy replaced Rankine and his impact was almost immediate as his shot flew the wrong side of the post.

Maxted produce two match wining saves late on to maintain the Lions advantage and Stephen Jordan was shown a straight red for a rash challenge on Hatfield. And despite four added minutes it was the Lions who triumphed and go in to Monday’s second Round draw.
