Guiseley stay top with their third win on the bounce with victory over last season’s fellow play-off contenders. In a classic game of two halves, the home side went in two goals to the good – Trinity having squandered a golden opportunity to halve the arrears – and then showed their defensive mettle as three astute substitutions gave Trinity the edge in the second half.
The Lions took the lead after just six minutes, when Josh Wilson’s persistence found Gavin Rothery. He slipped the ball out to Wayne Brooksby on the right flank and the midfielder delivered a superb cross which Rothery glanced past Jan Budtz. Rothery was again on hand fifteen minutes later to send Budtz the wrong way from the spot after Luke Waterfall had tripped Rhys Meynell in the area.
Simon Ainge fouled Matthew Godden at the other end ten minutes later, but as Godden and Jamie Yates squabbled over the spot kick, Drench kept his cool to keep out the latter’s feeble effort..
Trinity brought on Michael Leary and Bradley Barraclough early in the second period but although enjoying the greater amount of possession found the home defence in no mood to concede. Indeed, it was the Lions who went closest as Wilson was just short of converting Brooksby’s cross from the right.
