Lions in the ascendancy

Danny Forrest’s goal on the cusp of half time settled this feisty encounter between two old rivals and underlined Mark Bower’s Manager of the Month award as the Lions extended their unbeaten run to eleven games in all competitions.

Guiseley proved to be the more enterprising team in the first half, Liam Marrs taking the ball off Alex Johnson’s toes early on while Forrest tested Lewis King with a well-timed header.

Conor Marshall’s cross for the visitors found no takers during an isolated Boston foray before Steven Drench’s clearance sent Wayne Brooksby scampering down the right flank and he crossed only for King to succeed with a last-ditch clearance from Johnson.

The home side should have taken the lead a couple of minutes before the break when Andy Holdsworth was tripped in the area by Ian Ross, but King produced a top-quality save to push Rothery’s spot kick round the post.

Not to be denied however, Forrest sidestepped a defender on the edge of the area and unleashed a powerful shot that went in off the inside of the post with King rooted to the spot.

Despite a surfeit of possession, including forcing several corners, United lacked the quality up front to generate an end product as Guiseley’s central defensive pairing of Adam Lockwood and Danny Hall soaked up and dealt with all that Boston could throw at them.

Scott Garner was lucky to stay on the field after a scything tackle on Craig Hobson was deemed only worthy of a yellow, and the latter should have put the result beyond doubt minutes later in a one-on-one with King but seemed caught in two minds, allowing the keeper to nick the ball off him.

Boston fans were incensed in the dying minutes when, with their side on the attack, Jack Rea went down with what looked like a serious injury and had to be helped from the field. But in truth it was the overall quality of the home side that provided the platform for this win which continues their climb up the table.
