Lions hit High Peak

Guiseley paid their first ever visit to New Mills on the edge of the Peak District for this penultimate pre-season friendly and came away with another handsome win against the Evo-Stik Division One North side.

Despite creating a couple of good openings, the visitors found themselves behind after twelve minutes when Carlos Meakin finished off a good attacking move by lashing the ball beyond Steven Drench into the top corner. The Lions squared matters some thirteen minutes later; Jamie Clarke’s cross from the right found James Walshaw steaming in at the far post but the striker could only direct the ball across the six-yard box where it was pulled back into the path of Josh Wilson, who made no mistake from eight yards out.

Gavin Rothery put the visitors ahead on 34 minutes with a confident finish after the ball had pinged round the Mills area and Wayne Brooksby’s inviting ball in from the left found Walshaw heading back across former Guiseley stopper James Coates to give Guiseley a 3-1 advantage going into the break.

Substitute Nicky Boshell converted a corner at the far post to extend the Lions’ lead on 58 minutes, and despite the home side’s creating several half chances it was Danny Ellis who wrapped it up in the final minute as he swept home Nicky Boshell’s cross.
