Lions go down to narrow defeat

The Lions went down to a narrow defeat this afternoon at Nethermoor against a strong Doncaster Rovers side who will be plying their trade in EFL League One this season alongside Bradford City.

The penultimate home pre-season game got off to a bright start as Reece Thompson was just a boot width away from converting a wayward back pass and a Trialists free kick was clawed out by the visiting keeper.

After a positive start it was the visitors who took the lead against the run of play when Jonny Maxted parried a shot into the path of Liam Mandeville who slotted home the rebound.

The lively Thompson had another shot blocked and was then just a whisker away from converting a cross as the home side ramped up the pressure.

Rovers fizzed two shots across the face of goal with Maxted beaten and another shot went just over then angle as they upped the ante after the restart.

Jon Rooney’s snapshot was just wide as the Lions came back into the game and Callum McFadzean had a free kick tipped over before Thompson shot straight the keeper from a good position in the closing minutes
