Goals from James Walshaw and Mark Bower saw Guiseley safely through to a routine derby win against Harrogate Town at Nethermoor that moves the Lions up to second place in the table.
In a scrappy first period, Walshaw took a ball down the left and held off two defenders before driving a rising shot past visiting ‘keeper Jose Veiga and into the roof the net to give the home side the lead on 29 minutes. The second goal came just after the hour, when Simon Ainge cushioned a corner from the right into the path of Mark Bower, who crashed it home from ten yards.
Harrogate appealed in vain when they thought they had pulled one back but the liner ruled that the ball had not crossed the line, and apart from a couple of routine stops from Steve Drench that was the nearest that Town came to scoring on the night.
The game, however, ended on a sad note when Veiga, having made two brave saves earlier on, went down at Josh Wilson’s feet only for the striker’s knee to accidently catch his chin, leaving him prone on the ground. Lengthy treatment from both trainers eventually saw the custodian stretchered off to await an ambulance.
All at Nethermoor will wish the young man well and hope for a speedy recovery.
