Lions are back in the relegation battle

Guiseley’s long trip down to Essex proved fruitless as a two-nil defeat drops them right back in the mix and four places above the last relegation spot but with York, Woking, Solihull and Braintree snapping at their heels, all just a solitary point behind the Lions.

Two second half goals from Jerome Okimo, who headed home from a set piece, and Michael Cheek’s conversion from close in put paid to the visitor’s ambitions who themselves went close with Will Hatfield’s first half effort and Kevan Hurst second half attempt.

With Southport’s relegation confirmed today and North Ferriby and Torquay looking all but down, it leaves four clubs in a frenetic scramble to avoid the last relegation place and as a consequence Monday’s all ticket clash with Tranmere at Nethermoor assumes massive proportions as the visitors seek to peg back leaders Lincoln City while the Lions look for the three points towards National League survival.

Monday’s other key games sees improving York host Wrexham at Bootham Crescent while Woking travel to inconsistent Chester and Macclesfield entertain a Solihull side who seem to be in freefall having lost their last six. Finally, Braintree travel to Plainmoor to face Torquay for another six pointer.
