Lions and Minstermen Share the Spoils

Guiseley and York played out an entertaining Yorkshire derby at Nethermoor this evening and despite both sides having a host of chances the game ended goalless.

In an eventful opening Jordan Burrow’s looping header finished on top of the net in York’s first attack and he was then within inches of getting a touch on two crosses that skidded across the six-yard box.

For the home side Lee Shaw went close with a speculative overhead kick that forced Pete Jameson to tip his effort over the bar and he was then robbed at the last moment as he was about to pull the trigger.

Guiseley’s dead ball situations were causing the visitors some problems and from one long throw they had two shots charged down before Jameson came to the rescue palming away at full stretch to ensure that the teams went in level at the break.

Martin put the first of two powerful headers just over the angle on the restart and also saw his next header go straight at Jameson.

In between times Scott Garner’s trademark header at the far post finished up just the wrong side of the upright.

Brad Nicholson cleared off the line at the other end as the home goal came under siege midway through the half and Man-of-the-Match George Sykes-Kenworthy pulled off two important stops to deny the unbeaten visitors one of which had goal written all over it.

Despite a late flurry of attacks from both teams the final and decisive touch remained elusive and a draw was a fair reflection of what had been an absorbing contest that kept the crowd of just under 1900 on their toes throughout in a superb advert for Vanarama National League North football.

As a result of the draw Kings Lynn have taken over the top spot from City while the Lions remain in fourth place behind Saturday’s opponents Chester who are also one point better off.
