Lions all-square for second leg

Matt Wilson scored a precious equaliser in the penultimate minute of the game as the Lions came from behind and they go into Sunday’s second leg at Nethermoor all-square.

Danny Glover’s header after just two minutes caught the visitors’ defence cold as he rose unmarked to beat Steve Drench. Following that early setback, the Lions took control of the midfield but they were unable to find the cutting edge up front, where Joe O’Neill and Danny Forrest got little change out of the home defence.

Town created a couple of half-chances but all too often their passes went astray or were collected by an opponent. Andy Holdsworth put a header just over and Simon Baldry fired wide before the break.

From the restart, both teams upped the pace without creating any real openings until Chris Senior and Wilson replaced Danny Boshell and Forrest midway through the second half and both made their presence count.

With the clock ticking down, Senior got the better of Cartwright on the left and pulled the ball across the six-yard box where Wilson bundled it home in the ensuing melee, much to the travelling supporters’ delight and setting up an intriguing second leg on Sunday afternoon.

Guiseley team: Drench; Clarke, Merris; Toner, Ellis, Ainge (Capt); Baldry, Boshell (Wilson), O’Neill, Forrest (Senior), Holdsworth. Unused Subs: Burns, Ellington, Giles.
