MMU 2-2 GAFC Academy
The Academy team travelled to Crewe and Alsager to take on a strong Manchester Met University team. Guiseley made a strong start, with all the play in the first 10 minutes being in the MMU half. Forwards Luke Robinson and Ben Whitfield linked up well with their wide men, Jake Ledger and Luke Porritt.
After 20 minutes, MMU got back into the game with more possession, creating a chance that was saved by Josh Clarke, the Guiseley goalkeeper. With Guiseley dominating possession, Ben Whitfield put them in front on the half-hour after Luke Robinson pressurised the MMU goalkeeper, causing him to drop the ball.
In the second half the Academy continued to dominate, but they were caught on the break and MMU equalised. The visitors created a number of chances, but either the keeper produced an excellent save or there was a lack of composure in front of goal.
Then, five minutes from the end, Luke Robinson popped up with a well-deserved goal. It looked as if the Academy were on course for their first-ever victory, but following some slack defensive play in stoppage time a home striker was needlessly brought down and MMU scored from the penalty spot to make it 2-2.
It was a cruel end to a game that should have been three points in the bag, and a number of lessons must be learned if a result is to be achieved next week against the might of Birmingham City at Nethermoor.
