Guiseley missed a glorious opportunity to reduce the gap between themselves and leaders Hyde – who they play next week – having to come from behind twice to salvage a point with virtually the last kick of the game against mid-table Histon
The visitors could have had the game sewn up had not Damien Holman fluffed his lines with only home keeper Steve Drench to beat late in the second period.
The home side gained three successive corners in the first five minutes, but Matthew Wilson’s header from the last of them went the wrong side of the post. Zac Mills tested Drench shortly after while new signing Jason Price set up Andy Holdsworth, who pulled his shot wide. Mills again went close, shooting across Drench, before crossing for Holman to head home on 25 minutes. Danny Boshell grabbed an equaliser for the home side on 42 minutes, shooting round the wall and into the corner after Walshaw had been fouled 20 yards out.
The Lions were denied a stonewall penalty five minutes into the second period when David Livermore pushed Price over, the referee seemingly the only one in the ground who didn’t see the offence. And despite almost constant pressure on the Histon goal it was the visitors who broke on 61 minutes, Daniel Sparkes scampering down the right before crossing for Holman to slot under Drench.
Guiseley resumed their assault on the Histon goal as Jorg Stadelmann foiled Walshaw and Joe O’Neill’s goalbound shot was blocked on the line. Player-Manager Livermore then brought down O’Neill and was booked for his trouble before being given a stern lecture three minutes later for fouling Price. Simon Ainge fizzed one over the bar, Stadelmann performed miracles to keep out Wilson’s header and at the other end Holman missed the chance to wrap it up when he shot straight at Drench.
With Drench joining the melee as the Lions forced a series of corners it was substitute Lee Ellington who finally got the ball in the net from close in after a corner had pinged around the six yard box.
