Ladies through to 2nd round of County Cup

This week saw the Ladies look to the West Riding County Cup, a cup that have seen some great performances from the ladies reaching the semi’s and quarter finals the past two seasons. They hosted Brayton Belles down at Otley Town’s ground on Pool Road, Otley.

After the 1-3 defeat by Barnsley in last week’s FA Cup game the Ladies were looking to re-focus and get back to winning ways, with some players rested for the game this gave opportunities for players to get their first starts and for some a much needed 90 minutes.

Orla Haslam & Sally Jones started in midfield for the first time with Haslam making her first start for Guiseley, Alannah Jones came into the side in central defence will Laura Danskin pushing out to right back. Other changes in the side saw Neely Murrell & Julie Richardson back on the wings with Rachel White replacing the injured Lindsay Hopton alongside top goalscorer Caroline Hulme.

Brayton fielded a team of both experience and youth, they immediately felt the pressure of a sharp Guiseley break which saw Caroline Hulme score her 10th competitive goal of the season. With Guiseley continuing to dominate the game, Brayton caused little threat playing with one forward and the Guiseley defence dealing with a couple of attacking braces well. Guiseley found space well and the wingers and full backs linked well to create some good early chances, Rachel White’s causing the Brayton defence all kinds of problems winning balls and setting Hulme up for a couple more early chances. White’s game was over after 20 minutes after suffering a suspected dislocated shoulder though a ‘nothing’ challenge. White was replaced by Amy Parker, as White went to Wharfedale hospital for treatment. Guiseley continued to press with Danskin linking well and supporting returning right winger Richardson who also worked well with Haslam to push and counter attack Brayton’s defence, causing big headaches for the Brayton left back.

Guiseley scored their second goal after around 35 minutes after some great work from left back Cropp and winger Murrell who was battling hard and whipping in some fantastic balls with her trademark left foot. The goal showed great build up play Murrell switched play to Richardson who had her great strike saved by the keeper, the ball lander to Sally Jones who finished well to smash the ball into the back of the net.

The home side scored a 3rd goal just before half time with an own goal from one of the Brayton defenders, heading the ball into the top corner leaving the hard working Brayton keeper stranded.

HT 3-0

Amy Parker - Goalscorer & Player of the match

The second half was very much dominated by the home side, with Brayton working hard to try get back into the game. Guiseley pressed with some chances coming from Hulme and Parker.

Leanne Warren came on for Cropp with Murrell moving back to left back, Richardson also made way for Rachel Landricombe moving onto the right wing. Further attacking play showed Guiseley’s strengths with Landricombe and Warren both making good runs and whipping decent balls into the right areas.

Guiseley’s 4th goal came from another unlucky moment from Brayton with a Guiseley strike deflected into the bottom corner leaving the Brayton keeper stranded again after putting in some good saves.

Brayton came into game in the final 20 minutes with some good runs from their young forwards, both Danskin and Matthews standing strong and putting in some great tackles to stop Brayton venturing into the Guiseley box. Boswell also coming out to clear loose balls & supporting the defence when needed. With Guiseley settling back into the game, their 5th goal came from a great run down Landricombe down the right, coming inside to Jones who set Parker up for a shot just outside the area. The shot was deflected into the bottom corner again leaving the Brayton keeper scratching her head after putting in a great performance. With minutes left Brayton had their best chance of the game with a high ball over the Guiseley defence; Boswell came out to clear the ball with the Brayton striker advancing. Boswell made it to the ball but collided with covering right back Danskin, leaving the Brayton striker unmarked on goal. Alannah Jones making a goal saving stop on the line, comfortably chesting the ball down and clearing the ball down the field. Credit to the Guiseley defence who worked and battled hard today.

Final score 5-0

Manager Liam Kelly said after the game

“Congratulations to the players for the win. Performance wise we could have been more effective and dictated the game, but that will come. We had a lot of players making their first starts today.

But there was a lot of positives, a clean sheer which is a boost and confidence for Boswell and the back four, you look at the midfield two today, Sally Jones worked hard and scored a lovely taken goal, Haslam making his first start impressed me, there was actually a 25 minute period of the second half in which she had a pass completion rate of 95.50% which is immense. Wingers, very effective & Parker is continuing her good form and looking even sharper.

It was a good day for Caz Hulme to get back to scoring ways, for me she’s the best forward in the league who will ge t even better and absolutely thrilled for her to score as you can see how hard she works for it. So individually some good stuff, which is positive for the Club as these players will push the players who were rested this week for the shirts. But now our focus must switch to next week, its going to be a tougher test and our players need to make sure they are focused and shard to perform to an expected level for 90 minutes. Finally all credit to Brayton, they made us work and have a very good mixture of youth experience and youth, they will do very well this year.

Next week the ladies are back to league action with Barnsley away
