The Ladies’ bowed out of the Budweiser Women’s FA Cup yesterday with 1-3 home defeat to Barnsley Ladies.
The girls struggled to settle after an early Barnsley goal, with Barnsley playing a strong attacking formation with 3 upfront. Barnsley scored a second goal with one of their many attacking players making the Guiseley keeper come out as the Barnsley player finished well on the angle. This was quickly followed by a fluke 3rd goal which looked to be going high and wide but to the amazement of both teams tucked neatly in the angle making it 3-0 within 20 minutes. Guiseley adapted to keep the score at bay with some great chances to bring the scoring back, Lindsey Hopton came closest hitting the post with a fine break.
HT score 0-3
The Guiseley girls came out with fire in their bellies with Manager Liam Kelly making both team changes and a formation change at half time. Julie Richardson came on for Rachel Landricome on the left wing & Katie Jesson making way for Orla Haslam in midfield. The home side looked close to scoring on various occasions with Fuller, Hulme and Parker all close to getting a goal back for Guiseley with some great efforts.
Guiseley finally got their break with Caroline Hulme fouled by the keeper at a corner, Fuller stepped up and scored her second penalty this season..smashing the ball calmly passed the keeper. Guiseley continued to press for the remainder of the game with the Guiseley defence looking like a different team, limiting the Barnsley attacks. Wing backs Barker & Richardson worked hard to dictate the play and deserve great credit for their efforts. Guiseley made their final change with Hopton making way for Rachel White upfront with Parker moving back into midfield, Parker showing her great adaptability again.
Guiseley continued to press but were unlucky to walk away from the competition at this stage. They dominated the second half and showed fighting spirit which can be taken away as a huge positive from the game.
The Ladies’ host Brayton Belles next Sunday (21st ) in the 1st round of the West Riding County Cup, 2pm KO.
