Guiseley went down to another narrow defeat at Hyde in a game that was more akin to American Football such was the number of stoppages that effectively produced a multitude of set plays determined by the liberal use of the whistle that constantly interrupted the flow of the game leaving the fans of both sides frustrated in equal measure, writes John Clements.
The home side opened strongly and an attack down the left flank saw Eddie Brown execute a perfect lob over Tom Scott to put the home side ahead after just six minutes, this after Liam Tongue had signalled their intent with a low shot just the wrong side of the post two minutes earlier.
The next fifteen minutes saw little of note from either side until James Cadman tried his luck with a shot that was off target.
John Johnston went into the book for a foul and Scott did well to keep out the resulting free kick from Tongue.
The skilful forward then had to leave the field through injury just before the half hour and was replaced by the returning Luke Dean.
Hyde hit the post shortly after with the ball going behind while at the other end Mohammed Qasim got on the end of new signing Nicholas Walker’s free kick, but his header was straight at Craig Ellison.
Adam Haw replaced James Cadman on the restart and the change paid immediate dividends as a from Jordan Emery along throw was only partially cleared and the Lions kept the ball alive with Charlie Wood eventually evading several challenges in the area to set up Qasim who saw his shot turned into his own net by Jordan Fagbola on 49 minutes.
The lead lasted all of nine minutes as the home side were allowed to too much time and space down the byeline with the resulting cross finding the head of Fagbola among a gaggle of players at the far post as he made amends for his error minutes earlier.
Wood went close with a sweet volley and Qasim used his pace to get in a shot that was blocked before Haw was denied a certain equaliser by Ellison as Guiseley piled on the pressure.
Ellison also denied Jake Cassidy and Dean’s effort at the back post was just a whisker away from being the equaliser and despite six minutes of added time the match ended in a defeat, an outcome that should have been avoided given the chances that the Lions created in the second period.
