Guiseley show their steel to prise three points from Corby

Guiseley recorded what could prove to be an important three points against a high-flying Corby side at Steel Park.

While not at their fluent best, as they have been at times this season, Guiseley came out on top thanks to a Gavin Rothery goal in the 78th minute.  The game was scrappy throughout with only a small number of clear-cut chances for both sides.

The home side started the brighter, frustrating the Lions as they hassled and harried their visitors into long balls and sloppy errors. However, despite the Steelmen’s opening dominance, it was Guiseley who first went close, Simon Baldry rattling the post.

It seemed Guiseley were struggling to adapt to a new formation, with Simon Ainge sitting in front of the back four, but things began to look up for the Yorkshire side when Michael Burns arrived on the scene for the injured Danny Forrest at the break.

The Lions began to keep the ball better as the second half went on and eventually, after ‘keeper Steven Drench pulled off a superb save to keep the scores level, Guiseley went ahead. A slick through-ball from Lee Ellington fed Rothery who managed to poke the ball home to send the visiting fans home happy.

Even a late red card for Guiseley centre back Mark Bower wasn’t enough to sway the result, as Guiseley held on through a period of Corby pressure late on. The win leaves the Lions in third place, five points off top spot.
