The Lions made it five wins out of five at home this season after another impressive victory over Worcester City.
The Lions picked up where they left off after their last home game, a 4-1 win over Vauxhall Motors, and quickly got into their groove with Simon Baldry hitting the post inside twenty minutes. Gavin Rothery then put Guiseley ahead by smashing home his fourth of the season after Peter Davidson’s header rebounded off the post. The two sides played out an even remainder of the half with each threatening the other’s goal.
The second half began well for Guiseley as Lee Ellington went to turn and was hacked down, leading to a penalty’s being awarded in the 48th minute. Rothery powered it home for his second of the game and fifth of the season to send Guiseley into a comfortable two-goal lead. Again, Worcester looked to come back and had a number of opportunities to reduce the deficit, but following a long ball upfield Simon Baldry clipped over his defender and deftly chipped the onrushing Worcester goalkeeper.
Just when it seemed that Guiseley would go on to record another clean sheet, Worcester managed to pull one back. Full-back Martyn Naylor smashed home an impressive free-kick which gave Guiseley ‘keeper Jacob Giles no chance. There was one twist left in the tale, as Alex Davidson notched his first competitive goal for Guiseley with a deflected shot which found its way into the City net.
Lions’ Manager Steve Kittrick said after the match: “I thought we huffed and puffed for part of the game today but we haven’t played as well as we can and yet we’ve scored four goals, that’s the pleasing thing.”
“Teams are paying us a lot of respect and they’re matching us up so we’ve got to work that bit harder to get away from players. They’ve got to learn that teams will come up here and match us or play 4-5-1.”
Speaking about the omission of captain Simon Ainge, Kittrick said: “It’s just rotation, he wasn’t happy about it but I’ve just told him it’s about twenty players, not just one. “
