Game Of Two Halves But Guiseley Still Fall Short

Guiseley suffered a second succesive home defeat as Ashton United triumphed 2-1 at a chilly Nethermoor Park this evening writes John Clements.

Having gone in two nil down at the break Adam Haw pulled a goal back within five minutes of the restart but the Lions subsequently couldn’t forge an equaliser.

New signing from Alfreton Town, Lewis Whitham, made his first start for the club while Adam Haw and Luke Dean returned to the starting eleven with Nicky Walker and Keegan Hartley dropping to the bench.

The game marked a special milestone for Player Manager Danny Ellis who was making his 700th career appearance and there was also an impeccably observed one minutes silence to remember all of those who have fallen in the two World Wars and more recent conflicts prior to kick off.

The Lions started the game on the front foot and were nearly rewarded on eight minutes when Gregory Hartley could only parry Jake Cassidy’s shot with the striker reacting first only to see his shot come back off the far post.

Several corners followed this nothing came of them and as Ashton grew into the game it was they who took the lead on the half hour from the penalty spot when Jameel Ible was adjudged to have fouled a visiting player in the area. Darius Osei stepped up to shoot straight down the middle with Callum Hiddleston going to his right.

Eight minutes later and the Lions were two down as Ellis failed to clear his lines and the ball fell to Max Harrop only for the Guiseley Manager to bring him down just outside the area and Cole Lonsdale curled in a delicious shot that gave Hiddleston no chance from the resulting free kick.

The home side forced a couple of corners after that but once again failed to test the visitors defence as half time approached.

With a renewed determination to put things right, the home side applied the pressure that had been missing in the first half and were rewarded when Haw fired home a precision strike from twenty yards out five minutes in.

Whitham had a shot palmed away by Hartley as the Lions sought to level matters but all too often they chose the killer ball instead of playing the simple option and building through the midfield.

Ashton created a couple of openings as did the Lions but even when Joe Ackroyd and Adam Haw made way for Nicky Walker and Keegan Hartley in the 77th minute it always looked as though United would take the points and so it proved to be.
