Guiseley AFC Ladies 0-2 Hull City Ladies
Sunday saw a first defeat of the season for Guiseley where two late goals from substitute Zoe Mitchell gave Hull City a 2-0 win in this top of the table clash.
In an extremely competitive first half, Guiseley slowly gained the upper hand in the contest and Hull City goalkeeper Laura Wilson was forced to make two excellent saves from Charlotte Proud and Tanya Rich in order to keep the scores level.
At the other end of the pitch, Guiseley goalkeeper Erin Boswell had to make a more routine save to prevent Hull City from scoring.
Defences continued to dominate in the first half and it was no surprise that half-time arrived with the game scoreless.
Guiseley came out for the second half and once again took the initiative but were unable to create many clear cut goalscoring opportunities.
The complexion of the game changed after 70 minutes when Hull City substitute Zoe Mitchell took advantage of a slip in the Guiseley defence and thundered an unstoppable shot into the top corner of the Guiseley goal to give Hull City a 1-0 lead.
Guiseley responded strongly but were mainly restricted to shooting from distance as Hull City defended resolutely.
The key moment of the game came in the 82nd minute when a Guiseley free-kick was punched by the Hull City goalkeeper against Guiseley striker Tanya Rich and into the goal. Guiseley’s celebrations were cut short when the referee somewhat contentiously decided that Rich had been in an offside position and disallowed the goal.
Guiseley continued to press for an equaliser but with almost the last kick of the match Hull substitute Zoe Mitchell broke away from a Guiseley corner and lifted the ball over the Guiseley goalkeeper for her second excellent finish of the game.
Overall this was obviously a disappointing result for Guiseley who slipped two places to fourth in the table but the game itself was a credit to women’s football as two skilful and well-organised teams gave everything in search of a win.
