Day At The Beach For The Lions As They Beat Scarborough

It was another positive result for Guiseley as they beat Scarborough Athletic 1-0 at Nethermoor Park, writes Max Peberdy.

The first half started quickly, and Guiseley got an early scare as Scarborough’s Harry Green’s curling shot went just wide after only three minutes.

Guiseley continued the positive performance on Saturday against Spennymoor Town, creating several good chances.

Halfway through the first half Nethermoor roared for a penalty after Kallan Murphy was pulled back as he looked to get onto the end of Callum Chippendale’s cross.

Scarborough continued to create opportunities, and The Lions rode their luck at times – Liam Tongue blocked a well struck effort from Kieran Weledji, and a shot chipped over the Trialist keeper was cleared off the line by Joe Stacey.

A mistake from the visiting defence gave the home side the advantage going into the break. A poor back pass from the Scarborough defender was collected by Trialist B, who took it round the keeper and calmly converted to give the hosts the lead.

The start of the second half started the same as the first, an early Scarborough chance going wide of the target. Then a string of corners led to more goal line clearances – one effort from visiting captain Will Thornton was again cleared off the line, this time by a Triallist.

As so often happens in pre season friendlies, the changes flowed, and the chances dried up. Scarborough pushed but substitute keeper Danny Taberner was solid. Triallist B nearly added to his tally with an audacious chip that momentarily had the keeper scrambling. The evening went on and the light dimmed. Academy prospects K’Marni Miller, Kyle Burrow and Jack Mason came on, and brightened up the place.

Ultimately the night drew in sufficiently to warrant an early finish, the referee calling for full time five minutes early for bad light. He didn’t even need his light meter.

Paul Phillips was delighted with his team’s performance, “We got a different test (from the Spennymoor game), and I thought we stood up to it well…It shows we’ve got a good group of lads in (the dressing room)”
