Lions defeat is Chester’s gain

Substitute Owen Story’s late goal gave Brackley a League double over Guiseley and also ensured that the Lions’ pursuit of Chester finally came to an end as Lewis Turner’s goal a minute after half-time sealed the win and the title for the Cheshire side, ironically against the only side to have beaten them this season, Boston United.

After playing their fourth game in eight days the Lions are assured of a play-off place but now need ten more points to ensure a second-place finish when they travel to Stalybridge on Tuesday before facing Altrincham at Nethermoor on Thursday and then hosting new Champions Chester on Saturday. Meanwhile, the glut of games seems to be taking its toll on FC Halifax as they were edged out 3-4 at home by play-off rivals Altrincham in front of 1,400.  The Shaymen still have nine games to play before the scheduled season ends in three weeks’ time. Bradford Park Avenue maintained their play-off hopes with a 4-1 win at bottom side Hinckley, but Harrogate Town’s inconsistent form saw them suffer a 2-4 reverse at home to Solihull . Gainsborough’s play-off ambitions look to have been extinguished as they went down to their third home defeat of the week by the odd goal in three against Oxford City.
