Bignot: “We’re Ahead Of Schedule”

Ahead of Saturday’s pre-season friendly double header Marcus Bignot feels his Lions side are ahead of schedule in the pre-season preparations.

Mixed squads of first team and academy players are set to feature in both Gateshead’s visit to Nethermoor at the trip to West Auckland Town with the games kicking off at 3pm.

Going into the new campaign Gateshead have reverted to a part time training structure as they look to improve on last season’s 17th placed finish in the Vanarama National League under the stewardship of Steve Watson.

West Auckland compete in the Northern League and finished 5th last season, just two points behind our Emirates FA Cup opponents Shildon in third spot.

Ahead of the friendlies Tom Feaheny spoke to Marcus Bignot “There would have been more academy lads involved so far but we have had some trialists playing for us. We have time with the academy to look at them, they will get their minutes on the pitch no doubt.”

“We were talking, the management staff, about how pre-season has gone so far both physically and recruitment wise. We’re all in agreement that we feel we’re ahead of schedule.”

Talking about recruitment so far Marcus said “We’re trying to bring in the right personalities and characters into the football club. The supporters have seen good players out there and what they will see are players with the right trademarks of wanting to play for this football club.”

“The fitness will take care of itself, we’re working to a programme and we’re delighted with how that has gone. For us it is implementing what is happening out on that grass and a structure.”
