Marcus Bignot wants his Lions side to find consistency and go on a run of victories starting with Leamington’s visit to Nethermoor on Saturday for a 3pm kick-off.
After an inconsistent start to 2020, particularly at Nethermoor, the Joint Manager feels his side need to rack up four or five wins on the spin to push for a play off spot after falling behind in the race slipping to 11th place.
The Lions are eight points adrift of seventh placed Spennymoor Town but do have a game in hand on The Moors with Darlington, Farsley and Gateshead also chasing them down.
Another blank weekend didn’t allow us to register any points on the board after Saturday’s trip to Kidderminster Harriers was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch meaning The Lions played only three league games in February.
The visit of Leamington is the first in a packed month of action with six games to fit in and potentially a trip to Worcestershire for the rearranged clash at Aggborough Stadium.
16th placed Leamington come into the game fresh from a hard earned point picked up at the New Windmill Ground against King’s Lynn on Tuesday night, this follows on from their 1-0 home win over Southport which ended a run of four straight defeats in all competitions.
The reverse fixture ended 2-2 at the end of November with Brad Nicholson notching a brace to complete a fight back for a good away point, his first strike won The Lions’ Goal of the Month Award.
Speaking to the Wharfedale Observer ahead of the clash Marcus Bignot said “We need to go on a run of victories now, not just be undefeated. We’ve had back to back wins a few times this season, but now we need three, four or five in a row. We know we can get back to back but we need to go to the next stage.”
Bignot also praised Andrai Jones who struck his first Lions goal last time out against Gateshead “Andrai had a terrible start to the season. He picked up an injury and missed all of pre-season and well beyond that too. But he’s worked hard to find his way back into the team. He offers us a key ingredient, playing in the middle and making that vital pass.”
“He’s experienced at this level too (Jones has played non-league football for Alfreton Town, Gateshead and Southport).”
Marcus and Russ O’Neill have a full strength squad to pick from going into the game with no fresh injury concerns from the draw with Gateshead and with two weeks without a game the players will chomping at the bit to get going again.
