Battling Lions fall just short

Manager Adam Lockwood named an u changed team for the third game running with recent signing James Wesolowski on the bench after injury

The Lions began on the offensive with Jake Cassidy testing Alex Lynch and Will Hatfield header over from Simon Walton cross.

Craig Manon fired a left foot shot over the angle for Chester and Jordan Preston stung Lynch’s hands.

Guiseley then suffered a major blow when central defender Rob Atkinson went down injured and was replaced by Marcus Williams on 18 minutes with captain Danny Lowe moving across to centre back.

The visitors took the lead on 29 minutes when a cross from the right brought a spectacular overhead kick from James Alabi that crept in at the far corner.

Preston nearly squared matter shortly after but was denied by a timely intervention from centre back Blaine Hudson and Alex Lynch as the clock ticked down to the break.

The Lions eventually reaped the reward for their efforts on 52 minutes when neat interplay on the right flank between Hatfield and Connor Brown led to the latter being tripped I the area and Walton despatched the resulting spot kick.

In response Sam Hughes lofted a shot way over the bar from a good position before the impressive Hudson came to his side s rescue to deny Alex Purver after Lynch had rushed out of his area and got stranded in no man’s land.

The home side continued to press but were denied by Lynch who tipped Hatfield’s effort over before Cassidy’s weaving run ended with the visiting custodian diving at his feet and then tipping his low shot round the post.

With the season now halfway through the result leaves the Lions in 22nd place three points from the safety of twentieth which is where they finished last season.
