Academy Return To Winning Ways

Two glorious goals restored Guiseley Academy’s winning ways when they hosted Chester at Nethermoor Park on Wednesday afternoon, writes Rachel O’Connor.

Lewin Storton returned to the side after a two match absence to re-kindle what has been a solid centre-back partnership with Freddie Westfall. However, there was to be no appearance from the experienced pair of Miguel Valsau and Oliwier Grzelak.

Dave Currie’s young charges settled down to dominate the early stages and Chester’s only real threat in this time came from the long throw-ins of their number four who could reach the six yard box with apparent ease.

The game seemed content to pass by scoreless until the 37th minute when an exquisite take of the ball by Jack Mason saw him then put in a wonderful cross to the far post where George Sebine ran in to head home his eighth goal of the season.

K’Marni Miller made some great runs from left-back to get the crowd excited whilst Mason threatened throughout.

A great ball was played out right to Sebine who fired a tremendous shot towards the roof of the net but the Chester ‘keeper did well to touch the ball out for a corner.

Guiseley made further efforts to increase their lead and again the ‘keeper thwarted them making a point blank save from Lewin Storton.

With half-time approaching Guiseley increased their lead to 2-0 when right-back Kyle Burrows hit a great strike home for his eighth goal of the season.

The second-half turned out to be a bit of a damp squib but Guiseley managed the game well to take the points.

Guiseley: Callum Bradbury; Kyle Burrows, Lewin Storton, Freddie Westfall, K’Marni Miller; Robbie Miller, Sam Walters, Max Dickinson, Jack Mason; Danyaal Khan, George Sebine. Subs: Marley Spence (for Murray), Sam Macauley (used), Joe Taylor (not used).

A fall off in form with an away 2-2 draw at South Shields and a 3-0 defeat at Blyth Spartans corresponded with the inavailability of some players and saw the Young Lions lose the top spot they had wrestled from Farsley Celtic.

Celtic’s form has also been stuttering of late as the title run in begins in earnest. Guiseley, however, still top the form guide, along with Blyth, each with four wins, a loss and a draw in their last six games.

Farsley are down to ninth in the form guide with three losses, two wins and a draw in their last six games, taking just seven points from the last 18 available.

Recent results gave seen Guiseley drop to third place but there is not much in it and Guiseley have two games in hand on leaders Farsley, who are three points ahead of them, and second-placed Blyth, who are one point ahead of them. The Young Lions have yet to play Blyth at home.

Games will come thick and fast in April with one spell of three games in five days but of their remaining eight games seven are at home.
