The Lions hit four goals for a second league game running, after coming from behind to beat a Quorn side who had won their last two games in all competitions, writes Simon Bullock.
The afternoon got off to the worst possible start when Tim Berridge fired Quorn inside 30 seconds, after he seized upon sloppy Guiseley defending and rounded Jack Hall to fire into an empty net from range.
Conceding early didn’t faze Ian Richards’ side however, as the hosts pushed for an equaliser with Kallan Murphy spurning two presentable opportunities inside the first 20 minutes.
The breakthrough came on 39 minutes when a quickly taken Cam Wilson free kick was brilliantly flicked into the bottom corner by Jordan Thewlis to catch Quorn cold and level the score.
With that, the momentum of the game well and truly shifted and in the blink of an eye the Lions were ahead, as less than a minute after pulling level, Wilson collected the ball on halfway and burst forward. As the Quorn defenders continued to back off, space in front of Wilson continued to present itself and he fired a right-footed effort behind the reach of a diving Jake Laban to send Nethermoor into raptures. A fine solo effort.
And yet the Methodists will have considered themselves unfortunate not to have gone into the break level pegging, as on the stroke of half-time a Quorn corner was headed off the crossbar and onto the goalline by Ollie Brown before being cleared off the line at the vital moment by Murphy. Quorn players and management appealed for the goal to be given, but referee Thomas James and his linesman were not convinced the entirety of the ball had crossed the line. 2-1 at the break.
The second half began with Guiseley pushing for a third, with Aaron Martin, Wilson and Murphy all having good efforts blocked or saved. That was until Harrison Hopper burst into the penalty area and was clumsily bundled over by a Lindon Meikle. After a few seconds to think about the decision the referee pointed to the penalty spot.
Wilson and Martin played a quick game of rock, paper, scissors to decide the taker and after a stalemate on round one, Wilson’s selection of rock against Martin’s selection of scissors earned him the right to try and double his tally for the afternoon, which is exactly what he did with a coolly taken penalty that sent Laban the wrong way. 3-1 on 68 minutes.
The relentless Guiseley pressure continued and after substitutes Amir Berchil and Jack Emmett had good opportunities to make it four saved by Laban, it looked as though the Lions would come away with a 3-1 win.
That was until a minute to go when Laban, 20 yards off his goalline, made a tired clearance straight to Brown who fired home a first time strike beyond the Quorn goalkeeper and into the unoccupied goal to make it 4-1 and secure another important three points.
All in all, another fantastic Guiseley display against a Quorn side who, despite going ahead so early in the game, offered little attacking threat during the remainder of the match and never truly threatened to get back into the tie, barring Brown’s near freak own goal at the end of the first half.
