The Lions’ pre-season comes to an end on Sunday when League One side Barnsley make the trip to Nethermoor in a 2pm kick-off.

Ian Richards’ side will be hoping to make it six wins on the spin to conclude pre-season with a near 100% record.

Tickets will be available to purchase from our turnstiles on Sunday priced at:

• 11-18 Year-Olds: £5
• Accompanied Under-11s: £1

2026/27 GAFC season ticket holders can gain half price entry to all our home friendlies.

All turnstiles will accept card payment for entry except turnstile 4 which will be cash only, if you are wanting to pay with cash you must use turnstile 4.

‘The Lions’ magazine will be on sale for £3 from sellers near each turnstile and our Club Shop.

Cash payments are accepted for magazines and 50/50 cash draw tickets, although if wanting to pay by card for the magazine you can do so in the Club Shop with selected 50/50 sellers also accepting card.

Food and drink from The Lions’ Diner can be paid for by cash or card and the clubhouse accepts and prefers payment by card.

Team News

The Lions saw Lucas Odunston return to the side in the last two games but are still missing a number of players.

Lebrun Mbeka, Harrison Hopper, Jordan Thewlis, Will Longbottom, Frankie Sinfield, Jack Emmett and Michael Roxburgh all missed Tuesday night’s win at Pontefract Collieries.

Jay Rollins did complete 75 minutes of action for the first time on Tuesday night with the forward having only played a half in previous friendlies.

The Opposition

Barnsley will be hoping for a vast improvement on last season, they finished 15th in League One, their lowest finish in 23 years.

The Reds brought back popular boss Daniel Stendel who will be hoping to replicate his first spell with the club when he achieved promotion to the Championship.

The Tykes have retained Leo Farrell and moved to sign former Lions centre back Calum Hudson. 19 year-old Hudson finished the campaign on loan with Ian Richards’ side. He had caught the attention of the League One side who signed him for an undisclosed fee from Scarborough.

Also retained was Lewis Gould, the striker had a brief spell on loan with us last season but another former Lions loan player Feyi Afuape was released.

Barnsley have had a mixed pre-season so far with defeats to York City and Blackburn Rovers sandwiched between wins over Matlock Town and Scarborough.

Farrell has struck in both their wins to continue his good form from the 2026/27 campaign.

Previous Meetings

This is the first meeting between the two teams since pre-season in 2024 when a Barnsley X1 side ran away with a 4-0 win.

Leo Farrell struck a hat trick that night and it lead to the striker spending three loan spells with the club before ending the 2025/26 campaign in and around the first team at Oakwell.

The two sides played out a 3-3 draw in pre-season ahead of the 2017/18 campaign with the Tykes winning 3-2 at Nethermoor a year later.

Following the win on Tuesday Simon Bullock spoke to a delighted Lucas Odunston after he struck his first goal “I’ll be honest I saw Amir score for the first time in forever and I thought I am going to nick his limelight, he cannot have it all! The gaffer always says I need to be at the back stick for anything that drops and that is exactly what I did. I just creeped forward and it dropped for to me, it was a pretty easy finish to be fair. I am happy to get it because they don’t come around often for me, I need to get more this season!”

“When I speak to the gaffer I always pride myself on my defensive attributes, being able to keep clean sheets and help the back four. I think what is going to get me noticed more is going forward, getting those assists and the goals, it’s not really something that has been part of my game but I have told the gaffer I am going to get more.”

Looking ahead to Sunday Odunston said: “I think it will be a good game, they will probably field a better team which I think suits us. We have had a good balance of games with different dynamics but I am looking forward to it. Any result is a good result as long as we are getting minutes in our legs. The boys are buzzing and we are all just looking forward to 8th August really.”

David Bridson caught up with Amir Berchil following his strike on Tuesday night, the winger said “It is obviously nice to get on the scoresheet for once! I think it was just an accumulation of the team just gelling properly now, Friday was a great game against Blackburn and then we have come and won here on an astro pitch which was hot and sticky and we played well again.”

Speaking about Pete Goldstraw, who has taken charge of the last two friendlies, Amir said “Pete is an integral part of the staff and he’s a great guy as well, when we go out there we want to win and even if the gaffer isn’t here the mentality stays the same.”

Amir also spoke about his love for playing at Guiseley “I am loving it, it is a great club with great fans and management. I am enjoying my football and that is the main think, goals or no goals I am enjoying it. My whole life revolved around football, I want to win and get there with Guiseley.”

Looking ahead to Sunday’s final friendly the former Emley man said “It is a different test again, they will play, keep the ball and be sharp so if we are organised and play the way we can play I am sure we will get the win.”
