Owen Sinks Seasiders

Elliot Owen’s sublime header secured Guiseley victory over Whitby Town, writes David Bridson.

Joe Cracknell made two outstanding saves to ensure the Lions preserved a precious three points.

Owen’s delicious 17th minute header via Kyle White’s pinpoint cross was enough to net Guiseley the win.

The game began scrappily with Owen’s chance and subsequent goal being the first opportunity of note.

The Lions had to weather a Seasiders storm as Town ferociously attacked Guiseley following the opener.

A sly Layton Watts pass to Aaron Haswell crept out in the 20th minute.

Former Lion Jake Charles’ unchallenged header flew over four minutes later.

Cracknell’s first tremendous save, a stunning block to deny Charles, came in the 27th minute.

Jake Lawlor stood firm to deflect James Harrison’s fierce strike in the 31st minute.

The Lions battled to increase their lead but couldn’t make the most of their opportunities.

Jordan Thewlis glancing header from Harrison Hopper’s corner slipped wide two minutes later.

Jack Emmett’s 41st minute cross was staved away well by the Whitby defence.

Watts blazed a shot over as Whitby began the second half with attacking intent.

Ollie Brown’s acrobatic overhead kick sailed over in the 50th minute.

A frenetic 56th minute goalmouth scramble culminated with the Lions clearing a dangerous Town cross.

Harrison’s thunderous shot was steered clear by the resolute home defence mere moments later.

With Charles through on goal in the 65th minute Cracknell made his second sensational stop to once again deny the former Lion.

Leveraged by the one-goal advantage Guiseley fought hard to see the game out.

Joao Silva’s effort was closed off by the sturdy away backline two minutes later.

Hopper headed over from substitute Amir Berchil’s neat cross in the 76th minute.

A superb last-gasp challenge from Lucas Odunston prevented an intense Whitby surge forward in the 84th minute.

Mo Fadera, who looked formidable following his introduction, saw his canny 86th strike slam the post with the goal gaping.

A second Fadera shot was well saved by visiting goalkeeper Shane Bland in added time.

Harrison fired a late free-kick over as Guiseley held out to claim a vital win.

The Lions stay in 12th following the result but remain seven points clear of the dreaded relegation zone.

Guiseley are next in league action away at Cleethorpes Town on Tuesday 24th March with a 7.45pm kick-off.
