Lions Struggle To Find Roar At Hednesford

The Lions fell to a 2-0 defeat at high flying Hednesford Town on a clear, cool afternoon in the Midlands, writes Edward Robertson.

Manager Ian Richards was disappointed with the opportunities the hosts had at Keys Park, but took some positives from an improved second half performance. “Unfortunately we gave two disappointing goals away. The character in the second half was really good, we had more possession, but they were just more clinical in the box which has cost us today.”

Hednesford looked dangerous from the first moment, as with less than a minute gone, Montel Gibson’s interception released Akheem Rose whose effort spun wide.

With the game eighteen minutes old, the home side came close to breaking the deadlock. Chris Hussey’s free kick fell into the path of Rose. The forward’s effort was acrobatically blocked by Ollie Brown, much to Hednesford’s indignation as they appealed vociferously for a penalty on the grounds of a handball. The referee waved away the protests.

However, moments later, the Lions had conceded the first. A promising Guiseley attack was snuffed out, the ball travelling to the other end of the pitch and to the grateful feet of Rose. His shot was saved by Joe Cracknell, but the rebound fell to Gibson, who coolly tapped the ball home at the back post to give the hosts the lead.

The visitors had an opportunity to level the game at the half hour mark. Jack Emmett darted down the right hand side to pick out Jordan Thewlis on the edge of the area. The striker’s shot fell unfortunately into the path of goalkeeper Tony Breeden.

Another chance passed the Lions by as Lebrun Mbeka’s ball found Emmett in a dangerous position. His low cross so very nearly connected with the outstretched leg of a sliding Brown.

Much to the visitors frustration, Hednesford doubled their lead minutes later. A defensive mishap paved the way for Rose to confidently gallop towards an open goal, slotting down the middle to the jubilation of the home crowd.

In the early stages of the second half, the Pitmen could have had a third. Rose and Gibson linked up again as the former whipped an accurate ball onto the head of the latter. To the Lions’ relief, the striker had strayed offside, and the goal was ruled out.

Another chance for Hednesford came with the game an hour old, as Omari Sterling-James’ ball evaded the Guiseley defenders clustered in the corridor of uncertainty and fell at the feet of Joel Taylor. His effort could only shave the crossbar.

Cracknell made a series of impressive saves as he palmed away Sterling-James’ powerful shot, before impressively saving the rebound effort from Jake Jervis with his outstretched foot to keep the Hednesford lead at two.

The visitors had shored up the chances of their opponents in the second period, and as the game ticked on into the last ten minutes, were straining ever sinew to work their way back into the contest. Substitute John Lufudu’s tricky solo run allowed him to slide the ball into the path of Thewlis in the box. His shot was deflected by defender Ollie Harrison, and trickled wide.

It was a tough afternoon for the Lions at Keys Park as the squad and the fans alike trudged back up the M1 with nothing to show for their efforts. However, a solid performance in the second half against a Hednesford side flirting with promotion was nothing to be ashamed of, despite mistakes and chances missed at both ends. Richards was more than aware of this, as he prepares his tight-knit squad for a clash with Whitby Town at Nethermoor on Saturday.

“We have to be sharper, more ruthless and more clinical. That said, we can’t fault the players out their for their efforts, their work in trying to respond to setbacks, but we just couldn’t convert good positions into meaningful chances today.”
