Cables Electrify Lions

Guiseley were dumped out of the Isuzu FA Trophy 2-1 by clinical Prescot Cables, writes David Bridson.

Substitute Finlay Cross-Adair slotted the winner into an abandoned net in the 86th minute.

Lions goalkeeper Joe Cracknell was stranded having chased cross provider Tony Donaldson.

A stunning Conor Ferguson curler on the brink of half time had given Guiseley the lead.

Donaldson’s sublime 72nd minute flicked header edged past a despairing Cracknell to level the game.

Cables dominated possession in the first half but rarely threatened the Guiseley defence as the Lions created the better chances.

The deft John Lufudu sparked an early opportunity but his cross fell into the grateful arms of home goalkeeper Calvin Hare.

Three minutes later Lions captain Jake Lawlor lashed a shot over the bar via a Will Longbottom free-kick.

Ollie Brown’s volley fizzed over from Longbottom’s corner in the 22nd minute.

Lufudu made another defence-splitting run and cross mid-way through the first half but Jack Emmett’s resulting strike deflected wide.

The pacey Jack Goodwin sped past Lucas Odunston in the 28th minute but his low shot was fired straight at Cracknell.

Cracknell made a superb leaping save to deny the dangerous Donaldson eight minutes later.

Ferguson’s dazzling outside-of-the-foot strike gave the Lions the lead just prior to half-time.

The tricky defender’s astounding strike left Cables flabbergasted.

The home side began the second-half on fire with three quick corners.

George Goodman was on high alert to head a 50th minute cross off the line under pressure from Cables attackers.

Donaldson’s leveller came with the Lions camped in their own half courtesy of intense Cables possession.

Rarely did Guiseley venture into opposition territory prior to the equaliser. The leveller energised the defensively exhausted visitors.

A 73rd minute Longbottom volley was blocked before Jordan Thewlis’ vollied effort slipped narrowly wide.

The ball pinged round the Guiseley box five minutes from time but the scores remained level.

Cross-Adair took full advantage of the out of position Cracknell to give Cables a late lead.

Goodman made a second sterling off-the-line headed clearance to deny Patrik Farkas with the game deep into added time.

Guiseley surged forward in an attempt to level but couldn’t find a way past a well organised home defence.

In the closing stages of the tie Academy forward Zac Rushworth made his senior Lions debut coming on for Harrison Hopper.

Guiseley are in West Riding County Cup action on Tuesday 28th October with a 7.45pm kick-off at Harrogate Railway.

The Lions return to league competition at home to Hednesford Town on Saturday 1st November at 3pm.
