Thewlis Brace Blitzes Brid

Jordan Thewlis’ quick-fire double at Bridlington Town helped Guiseley into the First Round of the Isuzu FA Trophy with a 2-4 victory, writes David Bridson.

Town took the lead in the 19th minute when an unmarked Ahmed Salam hit home from the edge of the six-yard box.

Joao Silva won the Lions a penalty in the 38th minute when he was tripped following a sublime attacking run. The equalising spot kick was finely converted by Will Longbottom.

The Pitching In Northern Premier League East Division side went ahead again when Michael Coulson coolly slotted in on 56 minutes.

But substitute Lewis Knight levelled mid-way through the half with his first touch after a neat set-up from the dynamic Thewlis.

Guiseley were in front just three minutes later when Thewlis fired home after a superb run.

A 68th minute Town defensive lapse allowed the impactful Knight to cross to Thewlis who calmly netted his second and Guiseley’s fourth.

The Lions began the game at full throttle with Ollie Brown’s curling effort headed off the line by Kasper Williams with just two minutes gone.

Salam’s long-range attempt flew just over the bar six minutes later.

A long ball forward put Longbottom one-on-one with home goalkeeper Jonathan Dash on the quarter hour mark but the latter made a sprawling save with his legs.

Four minutes later Salam was gifted the freedom of the Lions box to open the scoring.

Stan Hewitt’s fierce 23rd minute shot was blocked by a resilient Lions back line as Town threatened to increase their advantage.

Thewlis’ wicked 27th minute run culminated in a parried shot but Longbottom couldn’t quite reach the resulting rebound.

Thewlis dazzled in the opposition box seven minutes later but he was unable to get past an equally sturdy home defence.

But Silva’s tricky run won the Lions a penalty which Longbottom successfully hit home.

Silva’s tidy ball through in first half stoppage time found Thewlis but Guiseley’s leading scorer was ruled offside.

This lively encounter took another twist when Coulson put the home side 2-1 in front.

Charlie Dunkerley’s tidy run was followed by a weak shot on the hour mark as a frenzied attacking spell begun.

A stunning tackle from the same player prevented Silva creating an opportunity a minute later.

Coulson’s effort fizzed just over in the 63rd minute.

Guiseley’s double substitution two minutes later, which saw Knight and Jack Emmett replace Silva and Jamie Spencer, inspired the Lions’ ascension.

Knight’s equalising goal came just moments after he entered the field of play.

Thewlis edged Guiseley in front just three minutes later before the same player finalised a calm move following Town’s poor backpass.

Amir Berchil’s 81st minute attempt was cleared as Guiseley refused to settle for four.

With four minutes added on the Lions successfully managed the game to emerge victorious.

Guiseley are next in league action at home to Warrington Rylands on Tuesday 7th October with a 7.45pm kick-off, Ilkeston Town then also visit Nethermoor on Saturday for a 3pm start.
