25/26 On The Road: Stockton Town

Following a gutsy performance in the Emirates FA Cup, the Lions are back in league action as they visit Teesside to take on Stockton Town, writes Scott Kelly.

“We took to our plan really well. I feel a bit hard done by. The lads have worked so hard. It’s disappointing but they are an outstanding team”

Boss Mark Bower was disappointed post-match as he felt the Lions performed brilliantly against a side at the top of National League North.

Team News

Barnsley defender Tom Senior is in on a month’s loan and will be hoping to make an impact and earn first team minutes.

Harrison Hopper and Will Longbottom did not finish the full 90 on Tyneside and it remains to be seen if they will be fit.

Jay Buchan’s red card will not effect his chances of playing on Tuesday and can feature, with Joao Silva and Amir Berchil expected to also be involved after appearing off the bench on Saturday.

Liam Ridehalgh and Jake Wright are still missing.

The Opposition

The Anchors enjoyed a fruitful campaign in 24/25, their first ever campaign at this level. A 3rd placed finish resulted in a play-off semi-final clash with the Lions back in April. A 1-0 victory meant they were due to play Worksop Town in the showpiece but were disqualified for fielding Adam Nicholson against the Lions – who had been sent off on the final day clash with Hyde United and was supposed to be serving a ban for the game.

Despite that huge setback, it doesn’t seem to have affected them heading into 25/26, with the side currently sitting 5th. A 2-0 defeat to Gainsborough in August is their only league defeat of the campaign with three victories and four draws meaning they sit with 13 points, three points better off than Tuesday’s opposition with a vastly superior goal difference. A shock 2-1 defeat to Trafford in the FA Cup 1st round qualifying meant that they were not in action on Saturday, meaning they have had longer to recover than the Lions. A 3-2 victory over Stocksbridge was followed by a 1-1 draw against local rivals Whitby Town last Tuesday.

Michael Dunwell’s side of 24/25 largely remains, with forward Kevin Hayes their seasons leading goalscorer with five in the league. Michael Sweet and Steven Thompson also remain, with Sweet bagging four so far. Defender Jamie Bramwell, and midfielders Josh Scott and Jake Petitjean all have two so far this campaign.

Goalkeeper Nathan Harker started at Newcastle United and is the Anchors number one. Captain Nicholson, Tom Coulthard and striker Amar Purewal are also key players for them. Veteran Purewal joined from Hebburn Town over the summer and enjoyed regular spells on the score sheet.

Previous Meetings

Guiseley advanced to the 24/25 play off final at the expense of Tuesday’s opponents due to their expulsion, but that was after the Lions were defeated 1-0 on Teesside back in April.

In the regular season, the Lions lost 3-1 back in August at Stockton, with a 1-1 draw following that at Nethermoor the following December, with Jameel Ible’s opener being cancelled out.
