Young Lions Run Riot At Stocksbridge

Guiseley Academy ran riot in the second-half of their FA Youth Cup game to destroy Stocksbridge Park Steels 9-1, writes Rachel O’Connor.

The Young Lions triumphed in this Preliminary Round game after taking a 17th minute lead when Derron Boyle produced a good finish following a swift move.

This goal was the only difference between the sides at half-time and was no portent of what was to come in the second-half.

Boyle increased the lead in the 53rd minute when he produced a fine finish after Lucas Alexander had had his shot saved by the ‘keeper. The ball fell to Boyle who exquisitely lobbed the ‘keeper and two defenders.

Nat Dyer extended Guiseley’s lead to 3-0 in the 62nd minute when he picked up a loose ball and slotted it into the bottom corner.

Stocksbridge had a slight glimmer of hope when they pulled a goal back in the 65th minute but then Guiseley ramped up their game scoring at regular intervals.

Dan Fotherby hit a 25 yarder into the bottom corner to make it 4-1 before full-back Will Buttle stepped up to head home from a corner for 5-1 in the 76th minute.

Zac Rushworth, a prolific scorer last season, opened his seasonal account with a composed finish for 6-1 in the 78th minute.

Boyle then completed his hat-trick in the 84th minute as he notched his side’s seventh goal by finishing off a neat move.

Substitute Emre Can got on the scoresheet in the 86th minute when he stroked the ball home for 8-1 while another substitute, Dan Brookes, completed the rout by slotting home from close range for 9-1 just as injury time started.

The Young Lions will face Emley at home in the FA Youth Cup first round qualifying with a date for the tie to be confirmed.
