Following postponement last weekend, the Lions travel to Warrington Rylands in what is only their second game of 2026 and first for 16 days, writes Scott Kelly.
“I thought the players worked incredibly hard for each other. That third goal, we left it late, but I thought the scoreline reflected the performance”
Facing his former side, boss Ian Richards was delighted with the team’s overall performance at Stocksbridge Park Steels, winning 3-1. There was praise in particular too for Harrison Hopper and Ollie Brown.
“We should always look up, but also never be too complacent. No team in this league at the moment is averaging two points per game. It is a tough league.”
Richards is confident his side can now start to look up the table rather than down after consecutive victories.
Team News
The key news at the club this week has been the departure of Connor Ferguson. After only joining in the summer, Ferguson has left the club to take up an exciting opportunity In America to join Portland Timbers 2 of the MLS Next Pro League.
Last week’s postponement has however given a couple of players an opportunity of a return, with Jack Emmett and Sam Bentley likely to be available again after injuries.

The Opposition
This will be the Blues’ first game of 2026 following two postponements. They have amazingly not played since Boxing Day, a 1-1 draw with local rivals Warrington Town.
Their form as 2025 ended was sporadic at best, as a home defeat to Whitby Town in November was followed by three defeats, two draws and just the one victory.
Despite this and despite what will be over three weeks without being in action, they still occupy a play-off place in the Northern Premier League. They do however have a chance to close the gap on leaders Hednesford Town as they are six points adrift with an extra game in hand, further aided by the fact the leaders travel to fellow promotion hopefuls Stockton Town this weekend.
This weekend gives Charlie Munro the chance to have his debut for the club, after joining from FC United at the end of last month. Midfielder Harrison Wood, who scored in that 1-1 draw against Warrington, has seen his loan from Blackburn Rovers extended further. The 21-year-old has four goals in 11 matches for the Blues.
Ben Hardcastle, scorer of the winner at Nethermoor back in October, is his sides top goalscorer with 10 goals. Alex Kiwomya, George Waring and Jake Burton are also players who chip in with goals in the Warrington forward line.
They are managed by Neil Reynolds, who took the reins in September 2024. Reynolds spent time managing Bamber Bridge and spent just under six years as manager of FC United.

Previous Meetings
This will be the two sides’ third meeting of the season, with the Lions 4-1 victory over Rylands in an FA Cup qualifier in August overshadowed by defeat to the same opposition at Nethermoor back in October.
That 1-0 victory for Saturday’s hosts was their first against the Lions in three meetings. The Blues have only won once against the Lions in Cheshire, a 2-1 victory back in March 2023.
