25/26 Isuzu FA Trophy On The Road: Prescot Cables

It is Izuzu FA Trophy weekend, with Guiseley hoping to progress to the second round and put current woes behind them. They travel to Merseyside to take on Prescot Cables for the second time so far this season, writes Scott Kelly.

“The work rate was there; the desire was there. The goals were very disappointing to give away. No teams are cutting us open and the goals we are giving away are definitely avoidable”

Interim Manager Liam Ridehalgh gave his thoughts on the Lions’ 2-0 defeat at Warrington Town, their third league defeat on the bounce. There is no sign of improvement for the Lions, with the FA Trophy likely a welcome distraction from current league form.

Team News

Ridehalgh withdrew Leo Farrell early on against Warrington, with confirmation post-match that it was a hamstring twinge, but it remains unclear if it is a flare up of the issue which has blighted Farrell over the last year or so.

George Goodman is hoping to pick up his first start after an impressive cameo from the bench on Saturday.

The Opposition

The Cables also reside in the Northern Premier League, and enjoyed a successful first season back last season, finishing 10th. The 24/25 campaign was their first campaign at this level since 08/09.

After their defeat to the Lions on 9th September, they went six games unbeaten until a 2-1 defeat at home to Stocksbridge last Saturday. They sit 12th and three points ahead of Saturday’s opposition in the league standings.

Centre-back Peter Clarke has served many EFL clubs with distinction, and at 43 he recently passed 1000 senior appearances. can be found in the Cables back line alongside club captain Liam Hollett. Calvin Hare can be found between the sticks. Ex- Leek midfielder Tom Scully and Jack Goodwin can be found in the midfield, with Ben Elliott and Finlay Cross-Adair, who joined the club permanently over the summer from Fleetwood Town.

The Cables have recently recruited Hungarian youth international Patrik Farkas, with the 18-year-old joining for three months on loan from Blackburn Rovers.

Their manager is Steven Daley, who has been in charge of the club since February 2023. There was some controversy however as Daley resigned shortly after their promotion to the Northern Premier League in 2024 following a summer of turmoil at the club. He was re-instated four days later.

Previous Meetings

Guiseley defeated Prescot 3-1 last month in the league, their third consecutive home victory against the Cables. The Lions do not have great luck in Prescot though, with a 6-3 victory in 2008 being their last victory there. Their last visit here was a 2-0 defeat back in February.
