Attention is back on the Emirates FA Cup with a trip to AFC Wimbledon’s Plough Lane Stadium on Saturday awaiting The Lions, Joe Priestley previews the first round tie.
It’s the stuff dreams are made of, a historic club and a dream tie in the world’s most historic football competition. Guiseley are venturing into the first round of the Emirates FA Cup once again and perhaps the stories of successes past are daring them to dream. But standing in their way is one of England’s iconic sides, a side with Emirates FA Cup pedigree and their own story to tell.
The Lions
Guiseley are anticipating a whole host of returns after last week’s covid issues. However the efforts of the Guiseley Academy players will not have gone unnoticed. Josh Stones and Dec Lambton have both impressed and will hope to have earned a place in the squad. One absence we can guarantee is Luke Hall, the new signing is cup-tied having played previously in the competition for Sheffield. Prince Ekpolo and George Cantrill have served their respective suspensions.
The Dons
Head Coach Mark Robinson’s comments in the South London Press were admirable during the week, if not a little daunting. The Wimbledon chief stated his intention to field the strongest squad he has at his disposal and give the competition the respect it deserves. Amongst a star-stuffed side that features players with full international experience, is 28 year old captain Alex Woodyard who has experience both in the football league and at non-league level. Like The Lions Wimbledon’s squad seeks to blend experience with the fire of youth. Aaron Pressley has led the line on a frequent basis this season at just 19. The Dons sit 17th in League One having had a turbulent season, however the Emirates FA Cup offers them what they will see as the chance to make a statement.
