Marcus Bignot and Russ O’Neill’s Lions are back on home turf after picking up their first point of the season in a 1-1 draw at Curzon Ashton on Saturday in a tight game with limited chances.

After facing AFC Fylde in the opening game another side tipped for promotion in Gloucester City are next up in the second home game of the season so far.

Gloucester come into the fixture fresh from a 4-0 homecoming hammering of York City last weekend in what was their first official fixture back in the city of Gloucester since 2007.

The Tigers did travel up to Nethermoor during the cut short 2020/21 season and went home 2-1 winners after Lebrun Mbeka’s late penalty wasn’t enough to pick up a point, that was their revenge from The Lions’ 2-1 come back victory towards the end of the 2019/20 campaign when Kaine Felix and Gabriel Johnson were on the scoresheet.

Gloucester are now managed by Paul Groves following James Rowe’s departure to Chesterfield in November last year, he has lead the side to fifth place so far having secured an opening day draw at Southport.

Speaking after Saturday’s stalemate at Curzon Ashton Joint Manager Marcus Bignot said “I think the important thing is we are off the mark for the season, any point away from home is generally a good point. We were conscious before the game not to lose back to back games and we achieved that.”

Andy Kellett is an injury doubt for the fixture with Gloucester City after being forced off 15 minutes after his second half introduction at the Tameside Stadium, “It is a massive blow, you saw in the short 15 minutes the difference he made. We did well in the first half and I thought we were unlucky to be behind, we just lacked in that final third and Andy came on and you can see what he added. It took us a while to get back into the game when Andy came off.”

“There is a lot of positives to take from this and we know there is more to come.”

Looking ahead to the visit of Gloucester Bignot said “They are a full time outfit, they will be disappointed last season got curtailed as they could have got promotion and I know that is their ambition to get out of this league. For us we have got our season up and running away from home so let’s hope we do the same at home.”

“Physically we are in great shape for a part time team, that is credit to the players who can compete with full time sides. We have just got to now, overtime when we get these players back, just adding that little bit of different with the ball, that quality and that decision. It will come no doubt but we have to understand it is a process and at the moment we are delighted in terms of the way it is going but more encouraged with how far we can still improve.”
