On the day of his 19th birthday, 18th August 2023, Edwin signed a one month loan deal with the club from Grimsby Town and made his full debut a day later in the win over Basford.

The forward has been playing with the Mariners’ academy since U10 level and has worked his way up to the first team.

Paul Hurst added Essel to his squad during the 2021/22 campaign and Edwin made his senior debut in a 4-3 win over Barnet in the Vanarama National League coming on as a substitute in the 80th minute.

In April last year Essel signed his first professional contract and spent the first half of the season on loan with Grimsby Borough before being recalled by his parent club in January 2023.

He then helped the Mariners to the quarter finals of the Emirates FA Cup last season before linking up with Cleethorpes Town for another loan move.

Edwin joined the Owls in late March and spent the final month of the season as they finished in 11th place in the Northern Premier League Division One East.

On 19th September 2023 it was announced that Edwin had returned to Grimsby Town at the end of his loan move.
