Rhys enjoying central role

Defender Rhys Meynell is enjoying his current stint on the centre of Mark Bower’s defence, having also assumed the captaincy in Saturday’s defeat against Hednesford Town.

Meynell, who began life at Nethermoor in the centre of midfield before reverting to left-back, told Tom Feaheny he is happy to now be in the middle of Bower’s back four following the recent signing of left-sided defender Ben Parker.

“I have played centre-back for a number of previous clubs,” he explained, “and although I like playing at left-back because I can do more, centre-back is my natural position so I’m glad to be playing back there.

“I’m also very proud to have been named captain and pleased that Mark gave me the nod before the (Hednesford) game.

“I tried to lead by example, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn’t, but I was pleased with my performance (against Hednesford).”

Meynell believes that, while Bower suffered his third straight defeat in charge at Nethermoor, the changes he has put in place have been felt already among the playing squad.

“Mark has changed a few things to be fair but he is not getting the luck he deserves because we’re playing the good football, we want to get that first result for Mark as well as ourselves,” he continued.

“He is using different techniques in training and we’ve got to move forward with Mark and everyone needs to get behind him like all the lads have.”

“There were a lot of positives to take from the first half (against Hednesford) but we should have been three or four goals up at half-time. That’s what has been said in the changing room and if we were so many goals up it would have been a different story.”

The Lions are back in action on Saturday as they host Bradford Park Avenue in the FA Cup.

After John Deacey’s men took all three points in the Skrill North clash between the two sides a week ago, Meynell says his team-mates are out to avenge the defeat.

“We did not deserve to lose to Bradford Park Avenue even when we had ten men, we owe them one,” he said.

“It will be nice to have a break in the league because, although we are playing well, it will be nice to go on a run in the FA Cup and get a boost from it.”
