Lions undone by Telford fightback

Guiseley’s trip to the New Bucks Head evoked memories of their last encounter with AFC Telford as the hosts came from 2-1 down to clinch victory.

Mark Bower, whose side were beaten on the road at Barrow earlier this week, was again left to lament a slow start to the game by his side as Mike Grogan tucked Tony Gray’s flick past Steve Dickinson in the Guiseley goal after 17 minutes.

On the stroke of half-time, Adam Boyes scored his first goal in a Guiseley shirt, prodding home from a Wayne Brooksby corner before the Lions enjoyed their best period of the game just after the break.

Danny Ellis completed his return to fitness by replacing Danny Hall in the first half and almost registered a goal when he headed Rhys Meynell’s delivery straight at Ryan Young.

The Telford goalkeeper then brought down Wayne Brooksby in the area minutes later before Gavin Rothery converted to put the Lions ahead.

However, much like in the Conference North play-off final of 2011, Telford roared back. After Ellis was sent off for bringing down Mike Phenix when through on goal, Phenix leveled 16 minutes from time.

It was always likely to be a tough ask for Bower’s side to salvage anything from the game and so it proved as Shaun Whalley and Simon Grand scored one each to secure all three points for Liam Watson’s men.
