Lions unbeaten run ended by Dover

Dover Athletic ended Guiseley’s five game unbeaten run in resounding fashion at Nethermoor this afternoon as they rattled in four goals without reply to maintain their challenge for a place in the play-offs.

In complete contrast to the measured midweek performance at Gateshead the Lions struggled to get a foothold in the but luckily for the Lions all of the teams below them with the exception of Maidstone United failed to register a win so it’s virtually ‘as you were’ at the foot of the table this evening.

Ricky Miller opened the scoring for the visitors on fifteen minutes as he turned his marker and fired across Jonathan Maxted into the far corner.

The home side replied with Simon Walton’s header just the wrong side of the post and Kevan Hurst brought a good save from Mitch Walker just before the break as the Lions finally offered some resistance.

Dover went close early in the second half as Maxted was caught in no-man’s-land but Millers lob came back off the post to spare the keepers embarrassment and was cleared.

The returning Alex Purver replaced Walton on 59 minutes but Dover deservedly doubled their lead as Ricky Modeste converted Jamie Grimes cross at the far post in the 66th minute.

Jordan Preston’s flick on nearly created a rare Guiseley opening for Purver but the game was all but over with ten minutes remaining as Miller escaped the attention of two home defenders and then went down over an outstretched leg in the area. The same player then stepped up to beat Maxted from the spot for Dover’s third.

Ross Lafayette seemed to go to ground under the softest of challenges in added time and beat Maxted from the spot for the second time to compound the home sides misery.
