Ladies Win with Second Half Fightback

Hessle Town Ladies FC 3 – 5 Guiseley AFC Ladies

On a hot sunny day Guiseley travelled to Hessle for their 3rd away fixture out of the first 4 league fixtures.

There were several changes to the Guiseley team who gave first starts of the season to Hannah Burnham, Laura Danskin, Becky Davies & Tanya Rich.

It was to be expected that it might take a little time for the team to reach full potential and Hessle took full advantage of uncertainty in the Guiseley team to race into a 3-0 lead after 35 minutes with goals from Emily Butler, Rebecca Shipp & Jasmine Read.

There was no further score in the first half and it was clear to everybody in the Guiseley ranks that significant improvement was needed all over the pitch if anything was to be salvaged from the game.

What followed was probably one of the best comebacks in the history of Guiseley AFC Ladies as the players went out determined to show their true abilities.

Shortly after the start of the second half Tanya Rich found space on the edge of the penalty area and fired an unstoppable shot just inside the post to make it 1-3.

Guiseley were now dominating the match and a well worked corner led to a driven cross from Kerrie Zserdicky being turned into the goal by the predatory Caroline Hulme to reduce the arrears to 2-3.

Still Guiseley pressed forward and after Michelle Walsh was fouled 25 yards from goal Kerrie Zserdicky stepped forward to drill the resultant free kick into the top corner of the goal and bring the scores level.

Guiseley were not content to salvage a point from this game and only a crude foul prevented Tanya Rich from running in on goal. From the free kick Kerrie Zserdicky again hammered the ball into the net off the post and Guiseley now led 3-4.

By this time Guiseley were in complete control of the game and debutant Tanya Rich showed great awareness and technique to lob the ball over the Hessle goalkeeper and into the goal to seal the win at 3-5.

The nature of the comeback was a great example of the the spirit and quality of Guiseley AFC Ladies although they know they can not afford to give teams a 3-0 advantage.

Team: Boswell, Burnham, Zserdicky, Danskin (Richardson), Davies, Welham, Bates, Walsh, Rich, Hulme, Parker (Smith). Unused substitute: Speer
