Fundraising confirmed for Stalybridge game

Young supporter Ben Savage and a group of friends will be raising funds for their World Challenge expedition with a cake sale at our Vanarama Conference North game against Stalybridge Celtic at Nethermoor on Monday, April 6th.

Ben – who participated in the Sports Leader Award funded via the Guiseley AFC Community Foundation and Football Conference Trust – has volunteered at a number of our holiday football sessions and was awarded the club’s Michael Hill Young Achiever Award last year.

“We are a group of twelve students from Guiseley School who have decided to undertake an 18-month course of money management, fundraising, itinerary planning and training to take part in a unique World Challenge expedition to Cambodia and Thailand in July 2016,” explains Ben.

“The development programme, which is to be led by World Challenge organisers will encourage students to learn key skills such as leadership, planning, teamwork and responsibility whilst providing a physical and emotional challenge.

“The main difference between our World Challenge expedition and a normal school trip is that ours will be student-led, which will place us in a strong position to make the most of our future careers.

“We have already started to organise fundraising events to help raise the money needed for our expedition which include a cake sale, a quiz and curry night and a car wash. The objective of our fundraising is to raise the £4,000 needed ourselves as a group and not just take it from our parents’ pockets.

“In July 2016 we will depart for Cambodia accompanied by a teacher from our school, and a world challenge leader who are responsible for ensuring the safety of our team but won’t be there to hold our hands. Whilst in the country, we will alternate roles such as team leader, accountant, cook, health and safety officer and transport coordinator so that we can operate efficiently as a team.

“During the four-week expedition we will complete and acclimatisation programme, a jungle trek, a community project where we aim to improve the life of the locals and then have the opportunity to see the sights that these countries have to offer. Everything we do in the country from booking bus journeys to cooking in the middle of the jungle will be done by group members.”
