Almond strike frustrates Lions

Louis Almond struck three minutes from time at Nethermoor as Guiseley were held to a 1-1 draw by Southport in the Vanarama National League on Tuesday.

The Lions – who handed a debut to Barnsley loanee George Maris – took an early lead through Liam Dickinson’s expert free-kick and went on to shade the remainder of the half.

Paul Carden’s Southport struck the post early in the second half but the hosts held off a spell of pressure prior to the hour mark and spurned a host of good chances to put the game to bed.

And Almond duly punished Mark Bower’s side, finishing well after a sloppy clearance to claim a point for the visitors.

Guiseley are back in action on Saturday with a trip to Braintree Town.
