Guiseley AFC can confirm that Matt Wilson has left the club and will play for North Ferriby United next season.

Matt’s second spell with the club began in January, having played for the Lions on loan from Alfreton in the previous season.

A versatile player, Matt has played in defence, midfield and, albeit briefly, upfront during his time at Nethermoor and is keen to move clubs in order to be closer to his Lincolnshire home.

He said on Twitter: “I want to announce that unfortunately I won’t be playing football at Guiseley next year. Moving clubs closer to Lincoln for family reasons.

“Thank you to supporters, staff and players at Guiseley AFC for making it a welcoming and friendly place to be. Good luck for next season all.”

Everyone at the club wishes Matt well with his future career.

Matt becomes the fourth player to leave the squad this summer, along with Danny Boshell, Sean O’Reilly and Kevin Holsgrove.

Guiseley AFC are delighted to announce that Steve Kittrick and his management team of Chris Holland and Martin Stringfellow are to remain at the club next season.

As such, negotiations are already underway with players who the club wish to retain in addition to those players on contract (Jack Rea, Wayne Brooksby, Phil Marsh, Gavin Rothery and Zack Dale).

The club are also pleased to announce that the first phase of planning for considerable enhancement to the facilities at Nethermoor is now ongoing with Watson Batty engaged as lead architects. This work will proceed over the coming months and will provide a facility fully supporting the club’s ambition on and off the pitch.

As always both the playing and ground development budgets will need to be carefully managed. To this end the club will continue to try and attract young, hungry players via the Youth Academy and other sources in order that the progress the club has made in the past five years can continue

Work on the pitch is also underway to further enhance our playing surface.

In terms of departures, the club can confirm that Sean O’Reilly has returned to the USA while Kevin Holsgrove has accepted an offer from FC Halifax Town. The club wishes them both the best of luck in the future.

As the position becomes clearer on both player recruitment and ground developments, further announcements will be made.

Guiseley relinquished their hold on the County Cup at Valley Parade tonight as FC Halifax completed a League and Cup double over the Lions with Gareth Seddon’s goal in the first half of extra time proving the difference between the two teams.

The Shaymen went close early on when Adriano Moke cut inside and rattled the post and Seddon should have opened the scoring moments later but shot straight at Steve Drench with only the Guiseley keeper to beat. Matt Wilson headed the Lions’ first effort straight into Phil Senior’s arms on twenty minutes and Phil Marsh put a rare shot over the bar.

Moke flashed another shot just wide from 25 yards and the Lions should have been one down when Josh Wilson’s attempted back pass set up Seddon once again, but his shot rebounded off the inside of the post and back across the goal line before being cleared.

Manager Steve Kittrick cut a lonely figure during the first half but must have seen enough from his vantage point in the stand as Wayne Brooksby replaced the ineffective Marsh on the restart. Gavin Rothery’s effort was a whisker away and he then shot straight at Senior, and when Jon Worthington repeated the feat at the other end extra time looked a certainty.

When it arrived, Seddon’s shot into the top corner proved to be the winner but ironically after going behind the Lions had perhaps their best spell of the game. However, as with other recent key matches it was too little, too late.

Hear Steve Kittrick’s post-match interview with Colin Robertson here.

As the Ladies’ season comes to a close, the Ladies hosted Hessle Town down at Otley Town for a 2pm KO. After a hard earned and impressive 2-1 win over Scunthorpe with only ten players last week the Ladies were looking to gain maximum points to maintain as higher finish in the league as possible. The ladies needed to secure a point at least to finish above rivals Scunthorpe with a higher position unlikely at this stage.

The game started brightly with Guiseley putting good pressure on the ball and playing it out to Richardson and Barker on the wings, using their strength on the ball and agility to frustrate the Hessle full backs. Richardson getting in some great crosses and Barker almost taking the lead from a well saved shot early on.

With Richardson winning an early corner, Alarna Fuller whipped in fantastic ball into the box. Centreback Laura Danskin screamed for the ball and smashed home a pinpoint header leaving the goalkeeper with no chance.

Score 1-0 Guiseley.

Guiseley continued to have the majority of possesion with Hessle tending to break on the counter rather than leading up with decent passing play. Hessle used their wingers to drive down the flanks, whipping in dangerous balls causing the Guiseley defence serious headaches. Colette Haslam making her full match debut at right back settled straight into side looking extremely comfortable and working well to like up with Richardson and feed her those balls she thrives running onto. Amy Parker and Rachael White accompanied Alarna Fuller in midfield and once again worked tirelessly as a unit to support Caroline Hulme up front with all three linking up well to provide some decent chances.

Hessle started to pick up their game and had some near-miss chances with half time approaching, some communication errors at the back led to Hessle having a clear shot on goal only for Captain Katie Matthews to slide across goal and send the ball for a corner, easily a goal saving tackle. Unfortunately Hessle took their chance from the corner, despite some shoving from the Hessle players and an obstruction on the Guiseley goalkeeper Hessle met the corner and headed home for the equaliser just before half time.

HT – 1-1

After a frustrating last few minutes of the first half, Guiseley knew they had to up their game and take their chances. The back four seemed to tighten up with Caroline Cropp and Colette Haslam seeing a bit more of the ball and Guiseley using the width of the more and getting balls into Barker and Richardson. Hessle again had their fair share of chances.

Player of the Match – Playmaker ‘Alarna Fuller’

After some good pressure and some close chances by Guiseley, Rachael White put Guiseley ahead after picking up the ball outside the box and smashing it home. With Guiseley now with a sting in their tale it was end to end stuff with Hessle pushing on forward and using long ball tactics to try catch out the Guiseley defence.

Hessle bounced back with a good bowt of pressure, again equalising from a well worked corner making the score 2-2. With Colette Haslam struggling with a calf injury, she made way for sister Orla Haslam who settled in well at right back. Hessle seemed to have put their foot on the gas pushing for the winning goal, the moment almost came with Hessle awarded a penalty in the final minutes.

Boswell won the mind games and dived the right way to punch the ball clear over the bar.. this was followed by a final corner before Guiseley broke away and the final whistle was blown.

Goalscorers : Laura Danskin & Rachael White

Player of the match : Alarna Fuller

Manager Liam Kelly said after the game :-

“In my eyes two points lost rather than one point gained. Credit to Hessle, second half they gave it a real go and played with a lot of purpose going forward. We are and should be disappointed at not finishing this game off, as we start to analyze our season, the bigger picture shows we have dropped points in games we did enough to win which as played a big impact on our final League position.

As Coaching staff we are appreciative and Thankful of the players efforts these past few months, we have a very small squad now and we literally have eleven, twelve players who have carried this Club since Christmas, not only picking up points, but playing some of the best Football we have seen all year. When we have achieved we have congratulated them, when we have come short we have picked them up, but today I just feel we lost two valuable points and as a Club we can have no excuses.

But Congratulations to Danskin on her goal, been a centre back limits your opportunities to score, so well done. Same to White, this is more than deserved, since moving into Midfield she as been a different player, quality, work ethic, intelligence, confidence have all improved, and that goal will be the first of many going forward. And obviously to Boswell. Erin actually pulled of a great save during the game which will be forgotten about after the injury time penalty save, so a well done and Thank You from us all. I’m glad it was saved, for us, the joy it brought Erin but also for Fuller who played terrific today, again, and would have been a bit of a kick in the teeth for her if Erin did not save it after a good performance”

Next week the Ladies host Castleford White Rose down at Otley Town KO 2pm for their final game of the 2012/2013 season. Follow the Ladies on Twitter for all the latest updates @GuiseleyLadies

Last Tuesday the Youth Academy ended their first ever season with a win, capping off a strong first year in the Conference Youth Alliance.

The Academy faced a tough task in the form of confirmed champions Gateshead, who also reached the last 32 in the FA Youth Cup and had only lost once this season. However, the Nethermoor pitch was looking great for the time of the season and the sun was shining so expectations were high.

Straight from the first whistle Guiseley came out roaring, and in the opening 10 minutes they had created a number of half chances, although nothing clear-cut. Gateshead were finding it hard to keep up with the pace of Luke Porritt, playing in an advanced role, while the hard-working Luke Robinson and the aggression of Hodgson and Marshall in midfield were giving them no time to play their usual possession football.

Instead, Gateshead were relying on the long ball up to their big physical forward and it was causing a few problems in the Guiseley defence. At half-time the teams went in 0-0; Gateshead would have been the happier of the two sides.

In the second half Gateshead came out strong but didn’t really threaten Josh Clark in the Guiseley goal, and just as it was looking as if Gateshead were gaining control of the game Guiseley broke the deadlock.

From a Gateshead corner the ball broke to Luke Robinson, who cleared the ball upfield to Ben Whitfield on the half-way line. After spinning away from the full-back, young Ben ran at the centre-backs and wriggled between them before calmly slotting the ball past the Gateshead ‘keeper.

Gateshead then had couple of chances to equalize, but the Guiseley defence stood strong. The Lions doubled the lead with 10 minutes to go after a corner dropped at the feet of Robinson, who struck the ball fiercely into the back of the net. After seven minuts of added time, the referee blew his whistle and Guiseley’s first season had ended in an excellent victory.

Coach Dave Currie said after the match, “I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone involved with the Academy this season. Especially Phil and Kinnon and others including Adie, Roger, Bob, Bryan, Stuart and Sue, who have treated myself and the lads so well.

“Also many thanks go to the other members of the coaching set-up, Danny Ellis and Colin Seal. However the biggest thanks go to the players who have been a pleasure to work with throughout the season.”

The ladies travelled to Scunthorpe with 10 players on Sunday after having the withdraw from the previous weeks game away to Whitley Bay after struggling to raise a full team. After the Ladies losing narrowly in a 2-3 defeat at home earlier in the season the Ladies were not going to give up without a fight.

Despite starting the game with a player down the girls game firing out of the blocks with some good early possession to put the wind up Scunthorpe. With some good early chances in the first few minutes, Guiseley were intent on making their team spirit the 11th player.

Scunthorpe had a flurry of chances missed with what felt like a 10 minute block of corners, however Guiseley defended well and put their bodies on the line to defend their goal. Polly Fildes & Abi Barker were working tirelessly to make runs and feed balls through to Amy Parker and Caroline Hulme, both who had a couple of early shots saved well by the Scunthorpe keeper. Frustratingly some offsides decisions not going Guiseleys way leaving Caroline Hulme unfortunate not to add to her great goal tally for the season. However Guiseley continued to cause great bouts of pressure creating Scunthorpes players to get increasing frustrated with Guiseleys fantastic defensive three made up of Caroline Cropp, Captain Katie Matthews and Laura Danskin. At one point Scunthrope’s attacking players were like ‘puppets on strings’ with the defensive line stepping up and leaving goalkeeper Boswell with little to do. Guiseley took the lead on around 25 minutes with a spectacular piece of skill and power from fans favourite Amy Parker. After intercepting a pass around 40 yards out, Parker took a neat touch out of her feet and let off a ‘rocket of a shot’ leaving the keeper no chance. The goal was Parker’s first since her 8 goal ‘smash and grab’ against Rothwell Town in the County Cup before Christmas. Guiseley continued to dominate with some great passing play, leading from the back with Fildes and Barker giving great options and causing Scunthrope all kinds of nightmares with their pace and great passing play. Alarna Fuller and Rachael White both putting up the fences and giving 100% to stop Scunthorpe breaking through and intercepting their play. Alarna Fuller put through some amazing balls for Caroline Hulme to be frustrating pulled for offside.

HT 0-1 to Guiseley

The second half came at a good time for Guiseley to get a well earned rest and refuel for what was going to be an extremely tough 45 minutes in soaring heat with 10 players. Scunthorpe had more of the ball in the second half, but their counter attacks were easily dealt with by the back three who rarely needed to call upon the keeper. Scunthorpe equalised after a flukey goal by their captain. After being awarded a free kick, the Scunthorpe midfielder whipped the ball to the left hand side of the goal which looked to be going wide or an easy ball for Boswell to deal with only for the Scunthorpe captain to lose her marker and cut across goal to head the ball back acrross goal into opposite corner leaving Boswell stranded.

With the girls knowing they didn’t deserve to conceed, they were not giving up the fight. They continued to press and attack running deep and creating some great chances from open play and corners. Fuller narrowly scoring from a freekick. The breakthrough of the game came with around 15 minutes to play when Cropp headed the ball down for Parker to put a textbook ball through for Hulme to calmly take the keeper one on one and neatly finish to make it 1-2 to Guiseley!

Both teams had chances in the later stages but Guiseley stood their ground and defended up until the last kick of the ball.

Final score 1-2 – Goals from Parker & Hulme

Captain Katie Matthews said after the game :

So proud of all the girls today, what a performance! Scunthorpe FC have always proved a difficult opposition for Guiseley, even with a full squad of players. To arrive at the ground with 10 players and not only win, but win convincingly is something every player should be proud of. The re-shuffle in formation and positions didn’t faze anyone and each and every one of the 10 players played with heart, determination and a no fear attitude. Some great inter play right from defence to attack, and two good goals, in particular Amy Parker’s stunning strike from 40 yards. Proud to captain the team today and proud to say I was a part of it. Well Done girls!

The Ladies have just two games remaining this season, next week hosting Hessle and then Castleford White Rose on the 19th May both games down at Otley Town.
